Datalogic TL50-W-815 RGB Contrast Sensor: Features, Specifications and Applications

Datalogic TL50-W-815 RGB contrast sensor

The Datalogic TL50-W-815 (order code 954651000) is an RGB contrast and colour mark sensor from the TL50 series, now produced under the Datasensing brand. It reads printed registration marks on film, labels and cartons, and tells the machine when to cut, seal or print. Because it uses red, green and blue light, it handles colour combinations that older two-colour sensors find difficult.

What makes the TL50-W-815 different

Most mark readers use one or two light colours. The TL50-W-815 has an RGB LED and selects the colour that gives the strongest contrast between the mark and the background during teach-in. Operators do not need to guess which light to use. This saves set-up time on machines that change film or packaging design often.

It has two separate outputs, one PNP and one NPN. That makes it an easy replacement on both Indian machines (often NPN) and European machines (often PNP), without changing the wiring.

Typical applications

  • Form-fill-seal machines for snacks, spices, tea and pharma sachets
  • Flow-wrap and pouch-making machines
  • Label printing and rewinding machines
  • Carton and sleeve registration on printing lines

How to teach the sensor

  1. Mount the sensor at about 9 mm from the material, with the long side of the light spot across the mark.
  2. Place the background under the spot and press the BKGD button.
  3. Place the mark under the spot and press the MARK button.
  4. Run the machine slowly and check that the output LED switches on every mark.

On shiny or metallised film, tilt the sensor 10–15° so mirror reflections do not reach the receiver.

TL50-W-815 or another contrast sensor?

For simple black marks on white film, a two-colour sensor such as the TLu-011 or TLu-115 is enough. For coloured or low-contrast marks, or when you want one spare that fits PNP and NPN machines, the TL50-W-815 is the better choice. Read our full guide: How to choose a Datalogic contrast sensor.
