A fibre optic sensor has two parts: a small amplifier, usually mounted on a DIN rail, and a plastic or glass fibre that carries the light to the detection point. Because the fibre tip is tiny and flexible, it reaches places where a normal sensor does not fit and detects very small parts, such as electronic components, pins, threads and labels.
Datalogic S7 amplifiers compared
| Model | Light | Setting | Speed | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S7-1-E-P | White LED | Push-buttons with display | 50 µs / 10 kHz (fast) | 2 m cable |
| S7-3-E-P | Red LED 670 nm | SET push-button, no display | – | 2 m cable |
| S7-5-E-P | Red LED 670 nm | Push-buttons with display | 100 µs / 5 kHz (fast) | M8 4-pole |
| S7-8-E-P | Red LED 670 nm | 12-turn trimmer | 500 µs / 1 kHz | M8 4-pole |
All S7 amplifiers are DIN-rail mounted (about 10 x 65 x 40 mm), run on 12 … 24 Vdc, have a PNP output (100 mA) and are rated IP65. We also supply the S7-2-E-P.
How to choose
- Display models (S7-1, S7-5): show the received light level, which makes set-up and fault finding much easier.
- White light (S7-1): useful for colour and contrast differences.
- Simple models (S7-3, S7-8): cost-effective for basic presence detection with a one-button or trimmer setting.
- Connector (S7-5, S7-8): faster replacement than cable versions.
Choosing the fibre
The amplifier works with diffuse (one fibre head) or through-beam (two fibre heads) fibres. Through-beam fibres reach further and detect smaller objects. Tell us the object size, distance and space available, and we will suggest a suitable fibre.
Applications
- Electronic component and PCB detection
- Small parts in feeders and assembly machines
- Thread and wire break detection
- Detection in high temperature or tight spaces with special fibres
