The Datalogic S3N is a miniature photoelectric sensor in an 11 x 31 x 19 mm housing made of fibreglass-reinforced polymer. It fits where larger sensors cannot, for example inside small packaging machines, labellers, feeders and electronics assembly equipment, yet it is rated IP67 and works from -25 to 55 °C.

Ranges for diffuse and background suppression models are measured on 90% white. All S3N models run on 10 … 30 Vdc and have a trimmer for light/dark switching.
LED or laser?
The LED versions respond in 0.5–1 ms and suit most presence detection jobs. The laser versions (PH) have a small, sharp light spot and respond in 250 µs with up to 2 kHz switching, so they detect small objects and fast-moving parts more precisely. Class 1 lasers are eye-safe under normal use.

Reading the code
In S3N-PR-2-M01-P, PR means LED version and PH laser version; 2 means cable and 5 means M8 connector; M01 is background suppression, C01 diffuse and B01 polarized retroreflective; the final P or N is PNP or NPN output.
