A fibre optic sensor needs two parts: an amplifier such as the Datalogic S7 and a fibre that carries the light to the detection point. Choosing the right fibre decides how small an object you can detect, how far away and how well it fits into the machine. Datalogic OF fibres have a PMMA plastic core and PE sheath, are rated IP67 and work from -40 to 60 °C.

Proximity, coaxial or through-beam?
- Proximity (diffuse): one fibre head sends and receives light. Simple to mount, short range.
- Coaxial proximity: emitter and receiver are arranged concentrically for a more uniform spot, which helps with small or shiny objects.
- Through-beam: two fibre heads face each other. Longest range and the most reliable detection of very small or dark objects.
- Array (OFA): many beams side by side detect objects anywhere across a wider zone.
Matching the amplifier
These fibres work with Datalogic S7 amplifiers. Models with a display, such as the S7-5-E-P and S7-1-E-P, make set-up easier. Read our S7 amplifier guide.
Installation tips
- Do not bend plastic fibres tighter than the minimum bend radius in the datasheet.
- Cut fibres with the proper cutter and push them fully into the amplifier.
- Use the bendable tip (OF-22) to aim into hard-to-reach places.
