Ultrasonic sensors measure distance with sound instead of light. Because colour, transparency and shine do not matter, they detect clear bottles and film, liquids, granules and dark objects that photoelectric sensors often miss. Where ultrasonic sensors work best
- Clear objects: PET bottles, glass and transparent film on packaging lines
- Liquid and granule level: tanks, hoppers and silos
- Roll diameter: measuring paper, film or cable reels for tension control
- Sag and loop control: keeping material slack constant between machines
- Dusty or wet areas: where lenses of optical sensors get dirty
Choosing between them
Choose the US18 for short, precise measurements up to 300 mm, for example bottle detection or small loop control. Choose the US30 for longer distances up to 2 m, such as tank level and large roll diameters. Its 4–20 mA output is robust over long cable runs to a PLC.
Installation tips
- Keep the sensor face at right angles to the target surface.
- Stay outside the minimum distance (blind zone) of each model.
- Avoid mounting two ultrasonic sensors facing each other without checking interference.
